Want to quit smoking? Here's an option
http://www.ecigaretteschoice.com/
Now, I'm not saying the Coalition endorses this. But for people who would like to quit smoking, I feel obligated to pass along this link for e-cigs. At least they allow smokers to do their thing without exposing people around them to secondhand smoke. No ashes to ruin the arms of your favorite recliner either!
All Abuzz -- consider yourself empowered
Even the Carlsbad Current-Argus has jumped into the community drug discussion, with a May 15 poll on their website asking, "is the drug trafficking problem in Carlsbad getting worse or better?" While the response rate of 104 as of this writing, and possibly the C-A's online readership itself, has little scientific value, the response rates provide food for thought. The answer generating the most votes (47.11 per cent) is, "it's a continual cycle. To keep it down, everyone needs to be more involved." (see www.currentargus.com for the actual survey).
If so many of us feel that way, the next logical question is, what will YOU do to make a change? In case you're short of ideas, here are a few that happen to be FREE and in most cases, easy to do:
- For parents, visit www.parentsempowered.org or www.theantidrug.com and get suggestions for talking to your kids about drugs. ParentsEmpowered.org even has an automatic texting service so you can send encouraging messages to your kid without having to come up with the right words. read more »
We're Watching...Because We Care
You may be noticing something new in local stores: small signs with a picture of a vigilant eye watching near products and on front doors. Welcome to the We’re Watching…Because We Care strategy. This is a simple program designed to reduce the production of methamphetamine (“meth”) in our community, and also discourage the misuse of certain health products by people attempting to pass employment drug screens.

In our travels about town, Coalition Preventionist Alison Bryant and I have heard, far too often and from people of all ages, a theme of "fear of retaliation" for reporting crime. We have also heard a number of incredible, inspiring true stories of crimes that were resolved, or busts that were made following a series of crimes, with one citizen's simple tip as a turning point in the case.
Coalition, Mental Health Center Form Tobacco Cessation Program
Carlsbad Community Anti-Drug/Gang Coalition recently gained national recognition as one of “100 Pioneers for Smoking Cessation.” The 100 Pioneers program is sponsored by the US Department of Health & Human Services’ Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration. It provides training and technical assistance for tobacco cessation, with a focus on people with mental illness and/or drug addiction. The Coalition is partnering with Carlsbad Mental Health Center (CMHC), which has existing programs for these populations.
